Ten years ago, Rocketship Education opened their first school in a church located in San Jose, California. The school has so far made tremendous steps and is always striving to better service delivery to the students and the community. For the ten years, the organization has learned the following.

  • Personalized Learning Is More than Just Technology

Rocketship Education has discovered the personalized learning is more than just tech as it involves understanding the problems of each family and student. In order to develop a strong relationship with parents, better service and deep understanding of the unique needs of every child is essential.

Many of the funders, parents, and partners advocate for a K-12 system rather than the K-5 system that is currently at Rocketship Education. This shows how parents and children have liked the initiative. In order to change the public school system, the focus should be on creating demand and not just supply.

  • Parents and Teachers Hold a Lot of Power

Rocketship Education has been empowering parents to demand political attention in their quest to ensure that their children get better middle and high school education. Ten years down the line, Parents have become powerful and are advocating for better education systems in public schools.

In building a better school system, teachers should be involved in forming culturally responsive schools. Teacher diversity remains a powerful tool in unifying students irrespective of their race, ethnicity, social class or creed.

  • Have a Strong Mindset

It takes a strong mindset to teach in a classroom every week. Not all educators will embrace feedback and a culture of improving student outcomes. Finding teachers who match the teaching model is essential.

Rocketship Education is a non-profit organization made of public charter schools serving the underserved communities in the United States. The group was started ten years ago with a mission to eliminate achievement gap through the creation of an inclusive learning system to help marginalized students achieve their goals.

The organization was founded by Preston Smith and John Danner in 2006, and it offers K-5 personalized learning programs. The reason behind the success of this organization just ten years after its inception is attributed to the inclusion of parents, funders, students and other stakeholders in decision making.
